WP-Syntax and Jetpack's markdown extra

Is there a way to get WP-Syntax to highlight code snippets entered with Markdown Extra style bracketing? E.g.

I’m using Jetpack for the markdown.

(I know it’s possible using <pre> tags but I want to use the backticks for comptability with other scripts which render markdown).
